Karanji Lake

Set at the city of Mysore, the Karanji Lake is encompassed by glory of nature, the site has one of the best aviaries and it also has a museum to preserve wildlife and nature interpretation. The lake is an ecological site and could be considered as one of the primary tourist attractions. The Lake has an area of around 55 hectares and the foreshore area measures 35 hectares, it is a water catchment and it is owned by Mysore Zoo as it provides source of water to wildlife habitats of the zoo.

Historical account

As far as historical accounts are concern the lake was once a famous hunting ground of migratory birds like herons and egret but with regular pollution it started getting deteriorated but again with interest of forest department it came into limelight and today it stands as primary tourist sites of Mysore.


The aviary which has been constructed on the shore of the lake is considered as one of the best and it was set up with a cost of around 3.8 million. The aviary includes artificial waterspout and two small water bodies. It has around 50-60 birds of 17 distinct species which includes Hornbill, peacocks, white peacocks, turkeys, black swans etc.

Butterfly Park

Within a small island of Karanji Lake, the butterfly park has been induced and it boast around 45 species of butterflies beside that with the help and knowledge of botanist, the host plants or nectars have been introduced which is considered important for breeding process of butterflies.


Some of the common breeds of bird you could find here are grey pelican, painted stork, ibis, cormorant, egret, etc. The place is ideal for bird watchers and recent survey has declared the fact that lake has around 147 species flying around.


The lake remains open throughout except on Tuesday from 8.30 am till 5.30 pm.

Entry fee

RS 10 is a nominal charge and you would get entry to the lake and with still camera you would have to add another INR 10 to get hold of the same.

Best time to visit

The season of autumn and winter that starts from October till February could be considered ideal for your visit here.


From Mysore junction it is located at a distance of around 3.8 km and traveler could avail Rickshaw and auto to reach here and from city bus stand it is only 3.4 km away and would take 10 minutes via roadways.
