Semmozhi Poonga

Semmozhi Poonga is a sprawling botanical garden with an area of around 20 acres. The natural tourist site is an initiative of Horticulture department and an exceptional place to come with friends and family to skip hustle and bustle of the busy town. The garden was inaugurated in 2010 by Chief Minister of the state and it is set around an area of Cathedral road and Anna Salai junction. The estimation of cost comes around 80 million in terms of construction and maintenance and today owing to awesome natural environment the Semmozhi Poonga is home to 500 species of plants and some of which are older than 100 years. It is home to wide variety of plants some of which are exotic, aromatic, medicinal and rare plants. The collection of exotic has been imported from countries like China and Thailand and rest is product of Indian soil.

Etymology

Semmozhi Poonga literally translated in classic language means Park.

Things to understand

The museum is a product of horticulture society and government as they cleared the land of 20 acres by asking Woodlands drive in restaurant to clear the land for construction purpose of botanical garden. In 2009, the Supreme Court of India gave its verdict in favour of State government and then state government commissioned people to construct the garden. Design of garden was conceived by Indian architects Rajendra Associates.

The garden

It features 8 sub gardens and 20 acres of land has been amazingly classified by architect. Sub gardens are home to various kinds of floras. It has tree court, mural walk and bonshai, herbal and exotic gardens to displays vivid colours and species of nature. To traveller surprise it has artificial duck pond and garden resembles Indian Buddhist style. It has awesome species sprawled across 22 exclusive areas including water and rock garden, butterfly garden, fern garden, sunken garden and theme garden, golden garden etc. it has nexus of exotic herbal species and around 90 odd spiral shaped and multi branch miniature trees. The bonsai section would amaze your mind as it is dotted with excellence of trees some with a height of 1 to 4 foot.

Most exciting feature of the garden is it is vertical in nature with an inbuilt irrigation and drain system. The arch of the garden is well covered by around 7000 plants from 35 different species which includes dracena, lilies, ophiopogon, schefflera, phyllodendron along with flowering species Krishnagantha. Micro tube irrigation system been arranged for watering the plants beside that butterfly garden is there for conservation and pollination. An ampi theatre is there to lure travellers beside that concrete benches covered by fern are a place where you would sit and appreciate the beauty of nature. Other features include disable friendly ramp, a mural walk through, fountains, ponds and cascades.

The garden also received plant worth RS 800000 from china, the cacti a very different species with non flowering character has been imported beside that there are bamboo, ficus and bonsai varieties. Water lilies you would witness has been donated by Thailand beside that 12 varieties of orchids came as a part of charity from Thailand government.

Visitor’s information

For joggers from 6 am to 8 am and for visitors 10 am till 8 pm except on Tuesdays.

Semmozhi Poonga has parking space for around 100 cars and 500 two wheelers, it has auditorium which can be use for organizing functions.

Entrance fee

Child above 13 years RS 15, people with disability are free to enter.

Best time to visit

The season of Winter starting from November to February is considered suitable to make visit in Chennai but for season of nature summer and autumn would be amazing.
