Thanjavur Art Gallery also known by the name Tanjore Art Gallery is the heritage attraction located in Thanjavur in Tamilnadu. The appealing art gallery was built by the Nayaks inside the beautiful Thanjavur Royal Palace in 1600 A.D. Most of the sculptures and art displayed inside the art gallery are of South India that was the assets of Tamil History. Most of the artifacts, sculptures and relics are recovered during the Chola Dynasty between 9th and 13th A.D.

The Thanjavur Art Gallery is a must visit attraction while in the city as this beautiful and intricately designed art gallery was built in the year 1951. The Art gallery is built in a huge area which also consists of Saraswati Library and Sangeetha Sahab (the Music Hall). Visiting the art gallery would allow you to soak in glorious history of Tamilnadu as the Thanjavur Art Gallery stands as the testimony of that glorious era of Tamil history. So while here, you are sure to have the sight of treasured collection of stone sculptures, bronze icons and the architectural skills of the Cholas.


The Art gallery has huge collection of art and sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses and most of them are found when the grounds were dug up. It is also believed the sculptures were buried in order to protect from the possible threat and enemies.

Best time to Visit: Thanjavur Art gallery can be visited throughout the year however if you are planning to visit during the best time, be here between the months of October to March.
